Interproximal toothbrushes and pre-threaded floss are two helpful tools if you have braces. However, there is another one that patients often forget about: dental wax. Although it sounds similar to candle wax, it’s actually crafted from natural materials like beeswax and paraffin wax. “Why is this helpful for someone undergoing orthodontic treatment?” you ask. Read on to find out!
So, Why Is Dental Wax Essential?
Although there have been significant advancements in the field of orthodontics (resulting in braces being more comfortable than ever before), the brackets and wires can still rub up against the soft tissue in your mouth. The good news is that dental wax can help prevent irritation! Since it’s designed specifically for patients with braces, it’s also waterproof. As a result, you won’t have to worry about constantly replacing it throughout the day.
A Quick Guide to Using Dental Wax Properly
Fortunately, dental wax is both effective and easy to use. All you need to do is pinch off a small piece and place it carefully over the sharp edge of the bracket or wire. That’s it! You don’t need much, so the small case your orthodontist gives you at the beginning of your treatment should last. However, if you go through it quicker than expected, you can always ask if they can provide you with more.
What If Dental Wax Isn’t Enough?
If you apply dental wax but are still experiencing discomfort, you’ll be happy to know that there are several other things you can do. The first is to steer clear of particularly crunchy and hard foods, like popcorn, apples, and pretzels. These have the potential to exacerbate any soreness you feel. Second, place a cold compress against the outside of your cheek to reduce puffiness and temporarily numb the area. Lastly, if nothing else works, take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed.
Some soreness with braces is normal – it means your teeth are moving! However, the irritation to your gums, lips, and tongue aren’t necessary. Keep a small case of dental wax close by to prevent it from happening to you.
