Traditional braces come with a number of benefits. Most notably, the ability to correct everything from minor misalignment and moderate bite issues to severely rotated teeth. Unfortunately, the metal brackets and wires can rub up against the soft tissue in your mouth in the process, leading to unpleasant irritation. Don’t worry – there are plenty of tips and tricks for preventing and managing mouth sores with braces. To learn what they are, read on!
How To: Prevent Oral Sores with Braces
Since mouth sores can be quite unpleasant, prevention is the best route. With this in mind, here are six best practices to implement throughout your treatment:
- Keep your mouth clean by rinsing with mouthwash regularly
- Brush twice a day
- Floss daily
- Drink plenty of water
- Limit your consumption of sugary and acidic foods
- Apply orthodontic wax over any sharp edges of your brackets or wires
What to Do If You Do Get an Oral Sore with Braces
If you do get an oral sore from your braces, there are a few ways you can alleviate the subsequent discomfort. First, rinse your mouth with a mixture of salt and warm water. This natural disinfectant will kill the harmful bacteria in your mouth. Next, avoid spicy, sour, or acidic foods, which can exacerbate the issue. That means avoiding tomatoes, soda, and coffee and opting for water, eggs, and yogurt. Lastly, take OTC pain relievers as needed. Aspirin and ibuprofen can decrease soreness stemming from oral pain significantly.
When To Get In-Touch with Your Orthodontist
Although unpleasant, mouth sores with braces are completely normal. However, if you get them consistently, then it’s a good idea to talk to your orthodontist at your next follow-up visit. They will likely be able to provide you with specific tips based on your unique case. If needed, they can provide you with additional orthodontic wax and share some oral hygiene tips to keep your mouth clean and (hopefully!) sore-free.
While you may get a sore or two throughout your time with braces, the flawless smile at the end of your treatment will make everything well worth it. Plus, with the above tips in your arsenal, you may make it through your entire time with braces without any prolonged irritation!
